What is Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy

What is Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Registered Dietitians provide Medical Nutrition Therapy, which involves thorough nutritional assessment followed by dietary recommendations in a personalized nutrition treatment plan (by mouth, feeding tube, or IV) to support health and wellness. Medical Nutrition Therapy complements other forms of medical care, especially with our specialized approach.

Integrative Nutrition unites traditional and alternative medical therapies, backed by clinical evidence, to support wellness. At Eating with Ease, this involves lifestyle: optimizing your nourishment and support from food and liquid, exercise, sleep, stress management, and your environment. As mind, body, and spirit are considered in your care, your pracitioner may suggest complementary medical therapies, such as Ayurvedic practices, essential oils, or meditation techniques, when useful. Once critical areas to support are identified, your dietitian will help you prioritize, set goals, and work with these components of lifestyle effectively.  In short, integrative nutrition seeks health by going beyond the plate to balance your lifestyle.

Functional Nutrition is related to the emerging field of Functional Medicine and is an individualized, science-based approach to care in which patients and practitioners work together to resolve the roots of illness.  Requiring practitioners to stay up-to-date on the latest in nutritional medicine, this approach integrates a patient's genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors to personalize treatment plans that lead to success.  In short, functional nutrition seeks health through metabolic balance and the proper functioning of the body systems, targeting the root of illness.

This holistic and thorough approach to care requires time, data, education, and detective work. A clinical diagnosis rarely indicates a thorough plan for achieving health. Your dietitian may request that you obtain additional laboratory tests and/or keep notes of your eating and experiences to best inform your care. Your dietitian will explain your care, give you options, and answer your questions. If you understand and trust your care plan, you will care for yourself with greater enthusiasm.  Moreover, integrative and functional medicine can help you to restore balance and feel better when there is no other tenable medical option available.

You have one body (made of parts that work together) and one metabolism (made of chemical reactions that work together). Balancing these components requires precision care. By addressing the root of illness rather than spot-treating symptoms, a functional and integrative approach can deftly address the complexity of dis-ease. You may manifest an illness differently than another with the same diagnosis. Your care should actually care for you.

Your dietitian's role is to educate, elevate, and empower you on your journey to healing and restoration.

Sacral Support

Every time you eat, you have an opportunity to improve yourself-- mind, body, and spirit.

Your body is made, maintained, and moved by the food you eat-- your dietary choices thus far.

So why not choose to eat with ease? Diet does not have to be stressful-- not even for those suffering from chronic disease. With an attitude of gratitude, knowing that you can improve yourself every day with every bite, you can take control of that which you can change. If you are willing to be patient, observant, and honest with yourself, we can work together to improve your life.

No one eats food they do not enjoy for very long. Crafting habits that support you for the long term involves experimentation and understanding of your humanity. You got here through several small changes over time and you can get to a happier, healthier place in a similar way. Unless you have a very specific invasive infection, no magic pill will change the underlying conditions that got you into a state of dis-ease. It is up to you to re-balance your life.

Your Dietitian's Promise:

Your diet is the wide variety of foods that you choose to consume, not the foods you avoid. You can use your diet as a powerful healing tool-- every day-- and that tool is comprised of choices you make. I will respect your dietary choices.

I will do you no harm and I will never give up on you. The secret to success lies with mixing your observations with my expertise-- together we will set reasonable, achievable goals that leverage your strengths to support your struggles and, most importantly, foster balance within so you can heal.

Whatever your wellness goal, be it losing weight, preventing chronic illness, dealing with disease, work-life-food-balance, or some good old-fashioned friendly support and accountability, I will offer you options to help you get well and stay well.

You are the master of your care plan and I respect your decisions about your body and mind. Always.
